Prompt pattern

Guide a task through a small number of steps

Numbered stages help visitors complete a process without losing their progress or place.

Fills the navigation part of a prompt.

Split the task into 3 to 5 numbered stages, showing the current stage and how many remain at the top of the form. Give each stage one purpose, with Back and Continue controls at the bottom, and keep completed answers when the visitor goes back. Do not ask for the same information twice or let a step fail without saying how to fix it.

Use this navigation pattern when it changes the result the agent should produce. It provides one concrete direction without deciding unrelated parts of the website.
